Best Scientific Paper’ at the European PEFC & H2 Forum

12 July 2013

It is always pleasing to receive an accolade from peers for innovation and the appliance of science to real world challenges.

So at AFC Energy we were cockahoop when our Senior Scientist Dr Naveed Akhtar representing the technical team recently picked up an award for ‘Best Scientific Paper’ at the European PEFC & H2 Forum in Switzerland. It was like winning an Oscar in the scientific world.

This prestigious award is clear recognition of the potential of AFC’s alkaline fuel cell technology in industrial and large-scale fixed applications. Convincing such an eminent peer group is not easy – so well done team!

This week also brought further endorsement of the fuel cell sector with the announcement of new proposals from the European Commission to back a EUR 1.4bn funding project for the development of fuel cells and the hydrogen economy. This initiative is part of a EUR 22bn package for research and innovation in Europe across several leading industries until the end of the decade

That the strategic importance of fuel cells in industrial applications is being recognised at an EU level is very encouraging. More the pity then that the penny has yet to drop with UK policy makers.

While the UK Government has thrown its weight and money behind a range of renewable technologies through Feed-in-Tariffs and other incentive schemes, the fuel cell sector’s potential for industrial applications continues to suffer from sheer indifference.

It is vital that the UK wakes up to the potential of fuel cells. The continued lack of understanding of their potential beyond domestic boilers and vehicles will cost us dear in technological lead, new jobs, manufacturing growth as well as exports. All AFC wants is a level playing field with other forms of sustainable energy to deliver on its promise.
