A famous baseball player who could have done a better job than a lot of stock analysts once said, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

AOL is stumbling over growth issues, not trying to hang onto faded glory with a product that history has already passed by. Look and Life magazines were the nation's mass media before TV. Their troubles in the 70s could hardly be less instructive as a model.

Of course, for those of us who read the NY Times on a regular basis, we realize that it, too, is an anachronistic publication whose reputation for excellence and influence is based on events that go back more than 20 years. Can you say Pentagon Papers? In fact, it is The Times that may soon resemble Look and Life -- certainly moreso than AOL.

Actually, the fact that it is in The Times is all the more reason why you should look elsewhere for hints of what the future holds.
