Alaska Airlines on Thursday introduced two Boeing 737-400 "combi" aircraft to its fleet serving Alaska. The jets are larger than the 737-200s they are replacing, and they will carry cargo in the front and passengers in the back -- thus the name "combi."
Seattle-based Alaska Air said it is in the middle of a $100 million upgrade of its cargo fleet and infrastructure, and it plans to add two more 737-400 combis to its fleet this year.
In all, cargo and passenger capacity will grow by 20 percent, the airline said. The bigger jets can handle four cargo pallets and 72 passengers. They also are more fuel-efficient and have better navigation technology, leather seats and larger overhead luggage bins, Alaska Air said.
The jets will serve Prudhoe Bay, Barrow, Kotzebue, Nome, Bethel and Southeast from the airline's Seattle and Anchorage hubs, Alaska Air said.
