Back in October, Compaq announced their grayscale iPaq Pocket PC, the H3100 series but much to the chagrin of those of us in the US, the 3100 was not expected to be available in the states. Luckily for us, it seems that the backlog of orders for the iPaq Pocket PCs has forced Compaq's hand a bit and they have decided to make the 3100 available in the US to try and alleviate some of the supply issues. The product spec sheet at compaq.com lists the H3150 as being the US/Canadian version and the H 3130 as the version for the rest of the world. One thing that puzzles me however is that Compaq did not bump up the RAM in the 3100 to 32MB for the US release. Other than that and the 15 shades of gray on the LCD, this iPaq should be very similar to the iPaq H3600 which recently won the 2001 PDABuzz.com PDA BuzzBowl Shootout.

Rumors and speculation of a grayscale Compaq iPaq have been around for many months now and Compaq has confirmed them with the announcement of the iPaq H3100 Pocket PC. The H3100 shares many of the same specs of its older brother, the H3600 including a 206MHz processor, Lithium Polymer battery, and 5.11" x 3.28" x .62" dimensions. The H3100 differs from the H3600 with its 16MB RAM, 15 grayscale semi transmissive STN LCD and 5.7 oz weight. Now to the bad news, according to Compaq, the H3100 is not available in North America and I was unable to find a price. If I had to guess, I'd say it will be in the $299-$399 range.
