Spacelabs Medical Inc.'s (SLMD) board authorized the company to seek

REDMOND, Wash. (Dow Jones)--Spacelabs Medical Inc.'s (SLMD) board authorized
the company to hire investment bankers to help it explore a spinoff or other
means of recapitalizing its Internet unit, Lifeclinic.com.

Spacelabs launched Lifeclinic.com on Monday.

In a press release Tuesday, Spacelabs said Lifeclinic.com enables consumers
to benefit from more than 10,000 vital-signs monitoring kiosks that measure
blood pressure, pulse and weight in pharmacies and other retail locations
across the U.S.

Shares of Spacelabs Medical were trading at 16, up 1 1/2, or 10.3%, on Nasdaq
volume of 94,300. Average daily volume is 58,476.

Spacelabs Medical said the kiosks have an established community of about
3,000 users who generate about 200 million readings each year.

SpaceLabs Medical said it expects the 10,000 current kiosks to initially
provide monitoring locations for users of the website.

Spacelabs Medical said it is at an advanced stage in the development of a
Web-enabled kiosk that will enable consumers to automatically download their
vital signs into their personal health chart on Lifeclinic.com.

Lifeclinic.com provides health-related content and uses proprietary personal
medical record charting software that enables consumers to track and facilitate
the management of their health.

Spacelabs Medical said the electronic kiosk should be completed in the first
half of the year 2000.

Spacelabs's shares were recently trading at 15 3/4, up 1 1/4, or 8.6%, on
Nasdaq composite volume of 116,200 shares. Average daily volume is 58,476
