Premenos Ships Latest Client/Server EC Software
EDI/Open Version 3 for UNIX now Available
CONCORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1997--Premenos, a leading provider of electronic commerce solutions for established and emerging trading communities, today announced the general availability of EDI/Open version 3 for UNIX, making its client/server EDI translation product available for NT and UNIX.
EDI/Open v3.0 offers a new native Windows Client for the Windows 95 and NT desktop together with new features and significant performance improvements. Field tests with Premenos customers have demonstrated that EDI/Open processes run up to four times faster than the previous release. A key feature enhancement is the sophisticated password management needed by Premenos' growing list of security conscious clients in the banking and finance industries. Other features strengthen customers' ability to map their core applications into EDI forms.
U S WEST, a leading communications, information and entertainment services company, uses the UNIX version of EDI/Open to send the EDI form for telecommunication products and services invoice - the 811 - to its business customers.
"Premenos has been very responsive in working with us to enhance EDI/Open so it is easier to develop and process the 811," said Bennet Pang, Electronic Commerce/EDI technical manager at U S WEST. "They developed a special feature that lets us handle complex data mapping for large telephone bills. Other vendors' mappers would require complicated logic to accomplish the same thing. By strengthening our ability to send large telephone bills electronically rather than as a truckload of paper, EDI/Open cuts costs for both U S WEST and our customers."
The EDI/Open mailbox provides features particularly useful to trading communities that need to process large transaction volumes. Users can access real-time transaction information and individual document status. By providing built-in filtering, documents can be sorted by trading partner, document type, status, date, time or user-defined data. EDI/Open's tight integration with commercial relational databases enhances reliability and security and lets customers more easily integrate EDI with the database applications. EDI/Open is available for customers either bundled with a Sybase 11 database, or to use with their Oracle 7.2 or Microsoft SQL Server databases.
"EDI/Open's market proven open systems architecture and rich feature set make it the preferred solution for companies migrating translations services from the mainframe to client/server systems," said Greg Vesper, director for Premenos' EDI/Open and Templar product management. "This technology gives us new opportunities with our Fortune 1000 customers."
EDI/Open server also provides parallel translation across multiple CPUs for both NT and UNIX. The true client/server architecture distributes the three primary information processing elements - user interface, application logic and database to take advantage of each platform and to give higher scalability.
EDI/Open runs on IBM RS/6000, HP 9000, Sun SPARC and Windows NT platforms. The Windows client runs on Windows 95 and NT workstations. Its interfaces provide seamless integration to applications like SAP, Oracle, Baan, JD Edwards and PeopleSoft. All versions of ANSI X12 and EDIFACT standards, plus their subsets are supported by EDI/Open. A companion product to EDI/Open is the Standards Modification Tool that facilitates easy revisions or modifications of standard documents to meet trading partner requirements.
