Apple's offshore cash a limiting factor: analyst
2:46 PM ET, 02/11/2013 - MarketWatch Pulse News Bullet
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Apple Inc. is getting more calls to return additional cash to shareholders, but Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research said Monday that the amount of offshore cash on the company's balance sheet may act as a limiting factor in this regard. Nearly 70% of Apple's current balance of cash and marketable securities currently rests offshore. This could constrain the amount of cash Apple can return to shareholders, unless the company considers using debt or repatriating its cash, the latter of which would incur a tax penalty. "While neither option is perfect, we believe investors would support either, if it enables a material increase in cash return -- we have a preference for the former [debt]," Sacconaghi wrote.
