Finally, the White House Press Corps has gotten over the shock of Ari Fleischer's habitual lying. Even denial of the obvious.....The press corps is coming with copies of Bush's words with them....

Political rivals can disagree over the best course of action, but to accuse one side of not caring about America's security is to level a charge of being unpatriotic. Rough stuff, even at election time.

The White House was concerned enough to trot out Ari Fleischer for a late-afternoon news conference, where he called Daschle's remarks "a mistatement of what the president said."

The press corps wasn't buying. The AP's Ron Fournier read back the quote from Bush's campaign speech, which had to do not with Iraq but with a disagreement over personnel rules for the proposed homeland security department. Yes, Bush said that, Fleischer said, but what he meant was American security would be undermined.

"I don't want to be argumentative here, but you're not responding to the question," Fournier said.
