I don't think there is any single tasking environment out there.
Single core mode could make sense for battery mode in notebooks though.

In a more general sense, it sure would be highly desirable to have the ability to run the cores at different clockspeeds - by this means preventing from the need to label the dualcore-product according to the clockspeed of the lower bin of the two cores even if thermal envelope would allow more.

I believe to have heard earlier (back in 01 or 02) that K8-platforms at least theoretically allow operation of differently clocked CPUs. Maybe somebody could refresh my memory.

Bottomline, yes, load-balanced multicore-chips would be great products.
