Yeah, we have that pesky ocean current that comes from Alaska and flows south that keeps the water off SoCal a bit on the cool side, even in summer (except perhaps the surface water temps).

We can always spot the German, Canadian (or Minnesota) tourists: they go swimming without wetsuits in March/April/May (and the Germans wear speedos).

It's also pretty deep offshore here (southern end of the Catalina Channel, which is very deep and cold).

On the other hand, the Channel Islands are virtually frost-free year 'round one of the few such areas in the 48 contiguous US states... and there are several underwater parks, including at La Jolla and Catalina Island.

L'Auberge is quite nice, as I'm sure you know if you've been there before, as is the beach at Del Mar (and Santa Monica, naturally). I've never been to Ojai.
