Alienware Pentium 4 Gaming PCs Available at BestBuy.com
1.6GHz and 2.0GHz RDRAM Pentium 4s at Premium Prices In a strange-bedfellows combination of elite gaming enthusiasts and retail mass-marketers, Best Buy has added Alienware desktop PCs to its online offerings.
The electronics merchants' online subsidiary BestBuy.com now offers 1.6GHz and 2.0GHz versions of Alienware's Area-51 computers, based on Intel Pentium 4 processors with RDRAM memory. The high-performance, handmade systems will be built to order and delivered directly to buyers, rather than appearing in Best Buy brick-and-mortar stores.
A 2.0GHz Area-51 tower with 256MB of memory, a 40GB hard disk, 16X DVD and 24/10/40X CD-RW drives, GeForce3 graphics card, and Sound Blaster Audigy 5.1 Gamer audio costs $2,190 in "Space Black" or $2,295 in "Conspiracy Blue" or "Saucer Silver," with no monitor or speakers included. We configured a similarly equipped Dimension 8200 at Dell's Web site for $1,867, but the Dell isn't put through gaming benchmark tests before shipping.
