Last chance for Sept 2001, will the trucks get there? Leaving from Korea? That is where the 8390 (US GPRS version) is made.

Nokia: Shipments Of 8310 GPRS Phone To Start By Fri

STOCKHOLM -- Finnish telecommunications equipment maker Nokia Corp. (NOK) reiterated Thursday that shipments of its new 8310 General Packet Radio Service, or GPRS, mobile telephone will start before October.

Nokia Mobile Phones spokesman Tapio Hedman said shipments of the 8310 model will start Friday at the latest and some delivery trucks may be leaving Nokia factories Thursday.

The phone may be available to consumers in Finland from Monday, Hedman said. During October, availability will be ramped up in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported Thursday that mobile phone retailers in Sweden have yet to receive the 8310 units and are still awaiting details on final delivery times. Nokia has said previously it expects shipments of the 8310 to begin in September.

Nokia expects to sell about 10 million GPRS handsets this year.

GPRS is a technology that allows phone users to remain connected to the Internet and permits data to be transferred more rapidly over second-generation networks.

Around 1135 GMT, Nokia shares were down EUR1.1, or 6.0%, at NOK17.15. A Stockholm-based broker said there remains concern in the market over when Nokia's GPRS phones will start selling in volume.
