Very few, and certainly not I, are saying to do nothing. All that I am saying is do all you can diplomatically before you undertake another war. I don't think that's an unreasonable request.

But diplomacy basically is doing nothing. Saddam doesn't respond to nice words and he can't be counted on to meet his promises. We had 11 years of diplomacy and it has gotten us nowhere. I doubt another month would be a problem but another 11 years will be.

For me, diplomacy includes everything but war. That means weapons inspections are to be resumed.

I believe there is still a considerable window of at least a few months and maybe longer for taking action.

We want to be finished before the end of winter, and it will take some time to make final preparations. Also if Iraq doesn't just fold like an accordion at the first American ground attack it might take some time to make the operation. What the UN voted for was a demand that Iraq comply (which they already voted for 11 years ago), then if If Iraq does allow inspectors in but sabotages them it might take a month or two for this to be clear. But many will say "give inspections more time to work", so we will probably delay more. Then we go back to the UN and despite the fact that Saddam once more failed to live up to his agreements and UN resolutions the UN either won't authorize an attack, or they will not authorize it quickly. Then the summer roles around and we don't want to attack in the summer in Iraq esp. when we are concerned about chemical weapons. (when its 115 in the shade you don't want to be wearing a rubberized suit). So then it waits till this time next year. But then Saddam figures some other way to manipulate things to delay again or France or Russia pushes for a delay.

Excuse me but we are not talking about a walk in the park. Where I come from, you don't enter a war lightly. You do all you can to prevent war. Only when nothing else works do you resort to fighting. I think the hawks in this country have gotten delusional about war after the Kuwaiti affair. I have not.

Its not the "another month" that I am worried about it is an endless series of additional months.

I believe you're worrying too much. If it takes another year, it won't be too late. With all the shit going on and the world's attention focused on him, it becomes just that much harder for Saddam to develop a nuke IMO.
