One of the things it's important to recall about the 60s and early 70s is not only the presence of active calls for revolution from the left but the serious splits on the left. An awful lot of folk not only didn't go there but lots condemned it. I was close enough to some of that to have seen it first hand. The lines between those who wanted to change the system through organized politics and the ballot box and those who wanted to go into the streets (the language of the time) started as small ones. But grew quite large fairly quickly. Organizations split over it. And there was lots of Bolshevik/Menshivik kind of talk--violence versus the ballot box.

The right is not yet at that stage and hopefully won't get there but there is no comparable critique from within the right.
