Crick hypothesized (in his book Life Itself) that life was seeded on earth by an extraterrestial civilization because he knew it couldn't have originated in the time available by natural means. Fossil evidence shows life originated on earth about 3.8B years ago which was just after the earth stabilized enough to allow life to exist (in earlier periods, the earth was frequently and violently hit by asteroids sich that any environment would have been stripped off). Life stayed simple until the Cambrian age when abruptly most major phyla showed up in the fossil record with no record of predecessors. "The fossil record had caused Darwin more grief than joy.
