So you're claiming I couldn't write an application that makes COM (or generic RPC) calls over the network, that doesn't depend on the network transport?

What you described was simply AppleTalk implemented over IP. The same thing was done by MS for NetBEUI over IP. Which is why all Windows network applications which use NetBEUI will run WITHOUT having been re-written for TCP/IP. Or is this not what you are talking about?
