United States 'bent on war' in Iraq, says Malaysian prime minister
Thu Dec 26, 2:32 AM ET

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The U.S. government is "bent" on going to war in Iraq and will find an excuse to do so, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said.

"I think they will go to war in Iraq," Mahathir was quoted as saying in an interview published Thursday in two local newspapers, including the New Straits Times. "If they can find an excuse, they will. They are bent on having this war."

Mahathir is an influential Islamic leader who has led his moderate, mostly Muslim country for more than 21 years. The Southeast Asian nation is a key U.S. ally in the international fight against terrorism.

But Mahathir has repeatedly warned that a U.S.-led invasion of Iraq would only fuel anti-Western sentiment among Muslims and could spur more terrorist attacks.

Mahathir said that a war in Iraq would be the most important challenge next year to Malaysia's economy, which like many in Southeast Asia relies heavily on the United States as an export market.

"If there is no war in Iraq, I think we are set to recover," Mahathir said.

Malaysia was already preparing for the economic fallout from a war in Iraq by developing its trade with Southeast Asian countries, China and the Middle East, Mahathir said.
