Bush couldn't get away with proposing elimination of the minimum wage. No one could. It has too much baggage as an issue for the public to be rational about it. It's the same as scrapping Social Security retirement, which I also favor. The farthest he could go there was to propose partial privatization. Perhaps that's his goal. Perhaps that's a first step in a grander plan of elimination. Hard to tell. Likewise, those who oppose increasing the minimum wage may have a longer term objective of eliminating it by holding it down to the point where it becomes meaningless at which time they can come forward and suggest scrapping it altogether. Again, hard to tell what's behind the proposals and whether anyone is thinking long term or not.
