ggg, or <g>, or <grin>, are all ways of telling folks to whom you are writing that the last comment was a joke, or made in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. If it sounded abrasive (within reason), and a <ggg> was after it, it was good-natured and a mutual laugh.

Since there are no voice inflections yet in typed words, these are sensible ways to overcome the problems with impersonable communciations. There are no tonal qualities, or facial expression for our alphabet.

As well, many times people will also use "emoticons" like sideways faces :>) (smiley face) to also denote comedy, or said with a grin.

:>( means you're sad, etc.

Us computer geeks are really weird, huh?......
