okay, i found the registry edit problem in win2000. the reason i was getting the 'error deleting key' messages was a matter of permissions. yes, i am logged in as administrator, but when i use regedt32 in the run dialog, i am able to check whether or not i am permissioned to make those changes. i changed the admin setting from 'read' only to 'full control' and i was off to the races!

the informative article you provided does mention regedt32 about halfway thru the piece, in reference to permissions and "a feature you may find annoying... the automatic selection of the last accessed key". i must admit that this alone was not sufficient guidance to lead me in the regedt32 direction. but it did cause me to start thinking along the lines of permissions, and when the R&D person from symantec who i am corresponding with mentioned regedt32, and i then received explicit directions from a winmag win2000 registry forum to "use regedt32 to check the permissions on the key", it all fell into place.

using regedt32 and the subsequent journey was a new adventure in computerworld for me, and an exciting one at that. i was able to successfully delete every firewall rule that i needed to remove, which up until that point had been mysteriously locked in place. the ultimate dilemma (getting norton personal firewall2000 to perform rule recreations after having installed a recent security update) continues, but i am one step closer to a solution, i just know it.

i have filed the win2000 registry piece away in an appropriate folder, where i am certain i will be accessing it again many times.

:)
