LindyBill,

<< The first program that I installed when I got a'486 was act >>

I first installed ACT! in 1987 on a used IBM PC XT with 1MB RAM and a 10MB Hard Drive running under DOS 2.3.

Pat Sullivan's (Contact Software International) ACT 1.0b was the 3rd program I installed. The first was Central Point's PC Tools, and the second was Smart (Smartware from Innovative Software).

In the Introduction (page 3) to the revised edition of "Crossing the Chasm", Geoff says:

"If in the 1980's two guys, each named Mike Brown, can found two companies nobody today has ever heard of (Central Point & Innovative Software) and bring to market two software products that have hardly become household names (PC Tools Deluxe & Smartware) and still be able to cash out in seven figures, then by God, we should be able to too."

Geoff forgot to mention Pat Sullivan who also cashed out in seven figures. He is back at SalesLogix.

<< it has always been buggy >>

If you installed on a new 486, you were at about v. 2.0 for windows, a POS, not only buggy but VERY slow.

Contact Software International & Symantec always cured the bugs (but not before inflicting some pain) and made patches available at no charge within a functional version. Symantec pioneered "Live Updates", to boot.

<< I won't buy an upgrade on either Act or Quicken because they have nothing to offer me but new problems >>

Whoa! You are a certified multiple X Quilionaire by your own admission and you won't "Buy an Upgrade". You are a software vendors dream. Live with your bugs! <g>

Let me assure you that ACT! is squeaky clean in versions 3.x forward provided you are properly patched and configured. PM me your ACT! version (Help about ACT!) and I will advise you how to obtain a bug free patch for that version at no charge. Please include your OS version.

As for Quicken by Intuit ... if you are not properly patched and configured I seriously hope that you do not use it to manage your personal finances.
