You hit the nail on the head. I guess old-line Russian generals have asked Putin the very same question.... They probably bitterly resent Putin's gambit that opened Central Asia's doors to the Yanks. Russian hawks wanted to push their luck in the wake of 911 and preempt any US move thru a blitzkrieg of sorts... But I guess Putin was of the opinion that the 911 masterstroke against the US was enough and that the US administration had to be left with a proper "breathing room"... Now, you ask me, "what do you mean by 'short-term'?" Dunno.... Was Vietnam a "short-term adventure" for the US? Beware of a Vietnamization of your Afghan commitment.
