There is a race to see who can fill the void left when Jesse Jackson self-destructed last Winter. Establishment liberal black "leaders" have been positioning themselves, based on the very reasonable assumption that Sharpton is a buffoon with far too much baggage to sell himself outside New York.

The emerging black middle class, however, seems to have no ostensible leader. There are plenty of qualified candidates around, including some in the current administration. Perhaps they simply admire them all equally, and pick people to vote for based on principle, rather than race...
