Perhaps his whole enterprise was not scientific,

Any one person's discoveries will not be objective.

An important part of the scientific method is in the repeatability of experiments. This introduces a new person's bias, but ultimately the subject parts cancel each other out leaving the discovery in it's distilled form.

In it's simple form, this means that anyone who mixes hydrocloric acid and sodium hydroxide will get table salt (and maybe a nasty burn) regardless of their bias. A more complex method pioneered in the early 1800s introduces prediction and repeatability into events which don't occur exactly the same way twice (finding a fossil for example).
