Taiwan's TSMC wins order from AMD unit Spansion - report

Sunday , July 03, 2005 19:53 ET

TAIPEI (AFX) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) last month signed a contract to make semiconductors for Spansion, a joint venture between US-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) and Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu, the Economic Daily News reported, without citing source.

The world's leading wafer foundry will at the first stage make a minimum of 3,000 wafers per month for Spansion, which will be raised to around 20,000 wafers when the manufacturing process is ramped up.

TSMC's eight-inch-wafer plant in Tainan Science-based Industrial Park will use 0.11 micron technology to start production for the US flash memory firm by end of this year and mass production form the first quarter next year.

Both companies declined to comment, the report said.

First is this ORNAND-related, Mirrorbit, or plain old floating gate???

Here's a theory: Spansion might be required by AMD to lower investments in its own fabs in order to become profitable it can be spun off.
