Wal-Mart says not aware of any SEC probe

CHICAGO, April 17 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc.<WMT.N>, the world's largest company in terms of annual sales, responding to rumors broadcast over a cable news channel, said on Wednesday it was not aware of any investigation involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Earlier, CNBC reported on a television broadcast that there were rumors that the SEC was investigating Wal-Mart over an unspecified matter.

"We're not aware of any investigation involving Wal-Mart and the SEC, Jay Allen, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said. "We think that the rumor started on the Internet."

A spokesperson for the SEC would not comment on the matter.

Shares of Wal-Mart were off 61 cents, or 1.02 percent, at $59.39. Earlier, the stock had fallen as much $1.35.
