All of a sudden subsidies which looked unjustifiable start to make sense


Not everyone thought Chinese carriers would never engage in a price war through subsidy offers. Carrier economics, as your post notes, favor signing on the highest data users. The capital costs of being a carrier and the competitive requirements in China are not much different than in the US. Expectations for Apple in China might be ratcheted up before long.
