Mike: I understood perfectly your response to freeus. If someone else didn't read your response well enough to get it's meaning, then there's a language problem, and it isn't yours.
Those who feel we are unfriendly territory for newbies probably haven't got the whole picture. We've had some come here, make zero effort to find out what we're doing or why, don't read the book, skip the header, and ask some sort of pedestrian question that any of the prep steps would have answered. Do we somehow owe special favors to those who don't make the effort we suggest. I don't think so!
We've had others who did the prep, step forth with a decent attitude, and introduce themselves, expressing an interst in contributing. Managing HUNT has at least taught me that some pretty smart folks know what we're doing, even if they are new to this thread.
We won't please everyone. Let's not try. It's not our job.
We're here to help one another make money, not stroke egos.
I can be just as tempermental as the next guy, but I also know that I've extended generous welcome messages to perhaps 20 or so people in the last 4-5 months, and some of them are still here, others may be still lurking. I've put one really offensive person on "ignore" and given rebukes to three privately, and received two apologies for bad behavior.
We chase off scammers in a hurry, and for every one person who is offended, I'll bet there are 100 who tell us we're the most civil thread on SI.
