I've been to Alaska. Spent time there. Would like for our grandchildren and their grandchildren to see our last real wilderness area. Remember Exxon Valdez. They lie when they say there will be little effect. They don't know. And they don't really care. It also opens up the entire area for more and more expansion if they have their way. Besides, they may be over-estimating the amount of oil there. We have to trust them to do the estimating. It's in their best interest to over-estimate and who would know any better? Whatever the amount, we can save that much and more with fuel efficiency programs. On the other hand, there are some areas of Alaska which can be exploited, but only as a trade-off on a monumental clean-fuels program to help wean us off oil dependency within 20 years. It's going to run out in 40-50 years anyway. Time to get started is now. If Bush reversed himself and did this he might even get re-elected and not impeached. Is he that smart? We'll see.
