One of the more interesting things about the current debate over Rumsfeld's leadership of the Pentagon is the odd position of Colonel H. R. McMaster. You may recall, McMaster was featured in George Packer's recent New Yorker piece on Tal Afar and the fragile ways he had put some serious reforms in place.

McMaster is also the author of a widely used book in the military entitled Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam. It's often referred to in these conversations with the various generals who are criticizing Rumsfeld publicly.

Here's a PBS Frontline interview with McMaster that looks interesting.
