Identix competetor -- Security Dynamics
Security Dynamic's has a SecureID card. Each card is unique and supplies a new passcode every minute. More than a few vendors allow the passcode to be used instead of their ordinary password. The stock has been a "10 bagger" in the past couple of years.
The main advantage of this device is that it doesn't require any special interface at the user end. If it required a scanner device, there would be software and hardware to worry about installing on many platforms with many Operating systems.
This system looks very promising for specialized systems, but not nearly as promising for generalized access systems.
RE: internet Security Identix has this scanner (AKA special hardware) that has to be pluged in somewhere. The Internet is not about special hardware requirements; it's about open systems. That's why HTML and Java have taken off. To fully compete with smart cards, Identix has to support Win95, WinNT, Win31, MacOS7, Solaris, SunOS, HPUX, Linux, AIX, OS/2, Network PC's, ...
RE: ATM Security If a smart card is lost or stolen, it can be deactivated and the client given a new one. How does Identix handle a compromised ID? Example -- what if someone makes a latex cast of a finger print? |
