Tom - that's a good question. Pcmagazine put out a free program a while back called opentrap. This program sits in the background and watches, documenting any calls made to your system. I've used it a few times when I was having some unexpected crashes and needed to find the program that caused it. I'm not sure if it would apply here.

If you saw a spike to 56k, you can be sure it's not a true speed indication, because upload speeds do not reach 56k. Remember the famous disclaimers on all 56k modems? upload speeds do not reach 56k due to FCC regulations . So I'm not sure what happened with you. Maybe the hard drive was just working refreshing caches and such and your screen froze for a few seconds while it worked making you think it was sending??? I know - what about the 56k on your screen?
random numbers?? :>)

There are programs out there to monitor your connection, I've never explored these as I've not had the need yet. Check out the pcmagazine site and see what they've got. zdnet.com

I'm not sure I helped but for what it's worth - I'd be interested in what you find out. Good Luck.

Luis
