WLAN stand alone APs et al no doubt is losing in importance. The main future WLAN place will be in cable and DSL Gateways/SetTopBoxes and in portable handsets of all kinds, where also BlueTooth is essential for peripheral connectivity. As for WiMax 802.16e, which essentially is nothing but 4G cell technology, that will most likely cannibalize on current 3G cell technology. That is already the case in Korea, where KT has rolled out their WiBRO system. By the way the good reason why Deutsche Telecom ignores WiMAX and right at this time refuses to participate in the auctions for WiMAX frequency bands: They already spent billions of Euros on UMTS (3G) frequencies a couple of years ago and are still struggling to get a return on that investment.

According to my information, Atheros understands the above scenario real well. That's why they have close ties to such DSL vendors as Infineon and Ikanos as well as to several Set Top box vendors. The idea being to be on their reference designs. Last but not least, Atheros is rumored to have BlueTooth technology ready for imminent introduction.
