Jony Ive on working with "new materials"

When I started to see Maciverse news stories in which Apple's design chief Jony Ive described the challenge of working with "new materials", my ears perked up. I immediately thought of two, and it turns out that several other smart people have had the same thoughts. These two materials are sapphire, which is widely rumored to be replacing Gorilla® Glass in some Apple devices going forward, and Liquidmetal®, which I've seen rumored to appear in an Apple device for at least a year. If you've been paying attention, this is not the first time that either material has been rumored to be associated with Apple, and of course this story certainly confirms at least some of that association.

If you want to play either of these materials, sapphire is manufactured by GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT) while Liquidmetal is licensed from Liquidmetal Technologies (LQMT), a penny stock. LQMT popped 18% on Tuesday.
