Flaming Lips to Back Beck on Tour Tue Aug 20, 9:52 AM ET WASHINGTON (AP) - Beck's decision to have Flaming Lips back him up on his next tour was based on a simple idea: he needed a band and they said yes. Beck says he usually brings together musicians and turns them into a band, but he didn't want to do that this time. "I didn't really feel like auditioning people and tracking people down," Beck said. With his last band scattered to different places doing their own projects, Beck decided to experiment. "I just thought of a couple of my favorite current bands that would be up for it," Beck explains. "There's certain bands that you can't ask, you know they just won't be up for it. But I thought Flaming Lips might be up for it and they were." Flaming Lips will join Beck in the fall, after he completes his current tour. Beck is performing solo, playing the acoustic songs that he loves. "It just allows me to improvise a lot on the set. Play whatever I want to play when I want to play it. Make up songs if I want. I'm able to change the show every night."
