Steve,
I like your analogy to McDonald's with AOL. I think that is a very valid point. They have competition, but who doesn't. The internet is such a fast growing thing that there is plenty of business to go around. AOL does not have to have all the business to be successful. They are still growing at a tremendous rate and they offer unique products which some users appreciate. Of course it's not for everybody and some people prefer ISP's. But there is enough business for AOL to make it successful. I do not think that analysts still recommend the stock just to unload it (although I'm sure there are cases where it may happen). Merrill Lynch recently increased their estimates and I do not think a firm like this would take part in such practices. They have also said that churn has decreased and they expect business to pick up with the winter and holiday seasons and of course advertising revenue is expected to be very important. It does have significant risks but in the long term they should continue to outperform.
