If someone has been misinformed about a topic where substantial contrary facts are widely available, and they won't make the effort to examine the complete data set and available analysis, they are making a conscious choice to stick their head in the sand. That's why so much of this ridiculous theology takes hold. People make a conscious choice to make an emotional investment in certain conclusions, and become resistant to any information to the contrary. It's one of the main factors poisoning our sick political debate today.
