Since copper has less natural resistance then a doped semiconductor material I would say that the 1GHz chip might actually produce less heat then the current Pentium II.

INTC has got to be especially worried about this, because all the specs I've seen so far indicate that Merced will generate about as much heat as a microwave. Even INTC has said that they don't think it will ever be available in a desktop. IBM has a great opportunity here.
