My experience in helping my elderly father was that his Medicare payouts were way below what the doctors billed, and the doctors had to write off the difference. Doctors are dropping Medicare patients in droves because they can't make any money.

OTOH I have "Cadillac" retiree insurance from my employer, and there seems to be a tendency to schedule excess expensive testing and whatnot.
