E.J. Dionne, Cornered and Conceding By Hugh Hewitt The Washington Post's E.J. Dione would love to have denounced Karl Rove's Friday speech to the RNC (which I posted on Friday. Note that new media made it available in its entirety the day it was given, but that the Washington Post gave only this account [linked below], and now an E.J. Dionne column.) Dionne's column, "Rove's Early Warning," is a great look at how a partisan Democrat reacts to a partisan Republican's outline of the 2006 campaigns ahead: <<< Rove went on: "Republicans have a post-9/11 worldview, and many Democrats have a pre-9/11 worldview. That doesn't make them unpatriotic -- not at all. But it does make them wrong -- deeply and profoundly and consistently wrong." Oh, no, those Dems aren't unpatriotic, just security idiots. >>> Exactly! That's Rove's point. That's my point. That's the point of most serious voters. So how does E.J. respond? Read it for yourself. Incredibly, Dionne doesn't even try to dispute the point. He can't! The evidence is overwhelming. More of it arrives every day, with every fresh round of denunciations of the NSA program, or Murtha-Moran "town meetings," with every interview Nancy Pelosi gives or speech that Hillary makes. It is a party of retreat in retreat from the responsibility of seriousness in a tme of grave national threat. Dionne concludes: <<< Imagine one Super Bowl team tipping the other to a large part of its offensive strategy. Smart coaches would plot and plan and scheme. You wonder what Democrats will do with the 10-month lead time Rove has kindly offered them. >>> It would be wrong to tag either Super Bowl team --even the Steelers-- as the Democrats of professional football. The fact is that the Democrats aren't in the same league and aren't even playing the same game, so the analogy won't work.
