Re <<Was told NYC social/cultural environment is not more what it was in 1980/90/2000>>

... am hearing the same thing, but, as in however ...

I was familiar w/ the New York of the 1980s, and was told by folks that the early 80s relative to 90s and 00's was a bad patch. The badness might have made NY a tad more interesting, like garlic stir-fried together with raisins, peanuts, and dices of lamb or per wish, hotdog slices in Xinjiang fried rice

per New York New York, where the garlic does not belong in the traditional recipe, but makes it better, whereas others might view the non-belong as raisins per regular fried rice, but also makes it better by appearance. The secret to get the Jack to eat is raisins in rice.

The coconut is totally a city gal. She spent 2 or 3 summers in NYC for her ballet intensives. She had done same in Vancouver. She loves Vancouver, and she adores NYC.

In HK she meets her friends at cafes, the dance academy, the heritage eateries, etc etc etc as opposed to the shopping malls which we have a surplus of. Below is one of coconut's favourite hanging out and eating spots, the authentically renovated former central police station and prison Tai Kwun ("big spot") for watching shows and foodie stuff.

But yes, definitely, Hong Kong is a very safe place compared to NYC at many levels.
