Nokia announces the world's first IPv6 enabled GPRS network
Nokia strengthens its leadership in GPRS by introducing the world's first IPv6 enabled end-to-end GPRS network as a major step towards next generation IP mobility networks.
Operators can use Nokia GPRS networks to provide their customers with new types of services that bring benefits offered by IPv6, such as global reachability and end-to-end security.
Nokia's GPRS networks will enable operators to make a smooth transition from IPv4 to IPv6 based service offerings. IPv6 and IPv4 based services can co-exist in the network during the transition phases, and IPv6 capable GPRS is easily implemented as a software upgrade to existing network equipment.
IPv6 provides vast Internet address space, making it possible to allocate an Internet address to practically every electronic device on earth, offering a clear advantage over the present IPv4 protocol. Furthermore, IPv6 technology brings the necessary security and quality, which the existing Internet is lacking today.
``Contrary to the current IPv4 standard, the vast number of address available in IPv6 will enable every device to be addressed and connected to the Internet while enhancing the security and quality of service now available. Nokia has taken the lead in supporting its customers for the introduction of commercial GPRS services and by integrating IPv6 with GPRS, this provides an ideal platform for operators to adopt new Mobile Internet business models in creating new GPRS services, with an evolution to 3G services,'' says Asko Rasanen, Head of IPv6 System and Marketing program, Nokia Networks.
Compared to existing Internet services, such as browsing and e-mail, mobile Internet services need to bring more interactivity and personalisation to consumers. By implementing IPv6 in mobile Internet networks, operators have more flexibility to respond to market demand.
In addition to bringing more addresses to the Internet, one of the key elements IPv6 adds to the network is quality of service. IPv6 will be a key element in 3G, as 3GPP has selected it as a mandatory feature in all-IP cellular networks.
The Nokia GPRS solution includes the industry's strongest and most efficient core GPRS system, including applications consultancy and systems integration expertise to integrate the GPRS core network into the existing service delivery and billing environment.
