Tin was traded above US$9,000 a tonne on the London Mercantile Exchange on Thursday, sharply higher by US$475 a tonne. This moves tin prices further into uncharted territory. The last time tin fetched record prices was in 1985 when they hit US$7,895 a tonne. Traders said the latest surge was due to buyers' concerns over rapidly depleting tin stocks. Stocks registered with the LME fell to just 6,820 tonnes yesterday, a large drop from 35,000 tonnes in early 2002. The tin price has doubled from early last year when it was traded at just around US$4,500 a tonne. biz.thestar.com.my
