Augustus, "better left unsaid?"

Why? If you assume that what he said was basically true and that the American public was generally uniformed, at least uniformed by those that were in a position to know, why were they better off left unsaid. And who was it that was better off if they were left unsaid?

I respect your thinking ability but I wonder if you've really thought this one through.
