I cannot comment on what has become of the American Jewish presence. I did hear this morning that American evangelicals had donated $20M to rebuild Northern Israel after the Arabs had lobbed rockets in for weeks. Apparently that was dwarfed by the $320M donated by American Jews. The report made it quite clear that the Christian support was very welcome and necessary.
