The first person convicted under Hong Kong's new national security law has been sentenced to nine years in prison for terrorist activities and inciting secession.

Former waiter Tong Ying-kit, 24, was accused of driving his motorcycle into three riot police last year while carrying a flag with the protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our times".

Beijing imposed the security law on the former British colony last year following anti-government protests that erupted in mid-2019.

The sentence was markedly longer than the three years requested by the prosecution.

Tong's defence lawyers appealed for no more than 10. He faced a possible maximum of life in prison.
