1. A system for detecting a substance, comprising:
an energy source to transmit an x-ray beam at a target to produce fluorescent energy;
an x-ray detector to detect said fluorescent energy from said target, wherein said x-ray detector is at an angle to said energy source;
an active cooling mechanism to cool said x-ray detector;
a multichannel analyzer to receive said fluorescent energy from said x-ray detector; and
a computer coupled to said multichannel analyzer to determine whether said fluorescent energy corresponds to said substance,
wherein the system is operable at large standoff distances of at least about one meter.
