I think you'll enjoy Freuchen's books. I did. One story after another about arctic life.

That was an amazing story you posted. Freuchen writes about all the artifacts that are dotted about the arctic, some of which tell harrowing tales of starvation and what the people were forced to do. Some mothers killed their children to spare them the pain of starvation, and ate them to live a little longer themselves. Some of them even survived.

The migration is curious since the climate to the south was warmer and more hospitable, though that land might have been dominated by other groups. "Maybe these guys who were adapted to marine hunting and a life in the high Arctic didn't see it as we do – as a very hostile place – but in fact a place full of opportunities," Willerslev said.

Freuchen writes about encounters Eskimo encounters with Indians, who they found warlike and cruel. Eskimos did not have war, but like the mothers who ate their children, the things they had to do to survive were unspeakable and would be unbearable to the rest of us. War was not one of them.

The largest economic unit was the family, until white men came and brought wooden houses. They brought guns too, which had a very beneficial effect because they just made what the Eskimos already did easier. The houses and other 'benefits' of white men's culture messed up their economic balance centered around one family at a time.
