Antiquites, I use the word in this light:

"4 a : the process of forming an opinion or evaluation by discerning and comparing b : an opinion or estimate so formed"

m-w.com

In society we honour our arbiters and judges. They must assess, evaluate, and judge of the evidence. We even refer to them as "Your Honor" to acknowledge our respect for the importance of judging.

That said, there are social elements which attempt to give negative loading to words of decency and maturity. I always stand up for the true meanings of words like judgment and discrimination. When we forego praise for a rapist we are discriminating. When we judge between fable and real events we are discriminating. It is necessary for human survival that the very things which give us our humanity {the ability to reason, assess, discriminate, and judge} are afforded their requisite honour and due.

You are right, though. My responses are better when I am not seized by the imps of mischief.

Lovely wine...a glass to you...
