Switching costs would be considerable for auto mfgrs: It takes two to three years to get "designed in" as a part for production eg dashboard displays...there is a great cost to that revision to design. another barrier to switching (rather than a cost) is ESD (Electonic Static Discharge) which is a significant problem with sapphire (evidently due to the non conductivity and electrode arrangement) Cree's LED's have solved this problem allowing them to be an "apprpovable" part. This is a very big deal in electronic assemblies.
